The garage tends to quickly become a junkyard that is used to hold all the junk that can't fit into the house. A garage conversion can help you transform the garage into a livable space by redoing the interiors, partitioning the garage, adding heating and air conditioning systems to make a complete family room, home office or even an extra bedroom. You can even convert your garage into a hobby room, a workshop, or a music studio. Take space constraints into consideration before converting your garage to a family room or bedroom.
A garage conversion allows you to create extra space at a cost that's much lower than making an addition to the house. You already have a room, and with some creativity and planning, you can easily convert your garage into livable spaces, like a family room or a bedroom. The focus should be on having a livable space that looks like an integral part of the house. This means that your garage conversion must include heating and air conditioning, new electrical fittings and additional plumbing, if necessary. If you are planning to convert your garage into your bedroom, an attached bath is a must. If you have a double garage, you can even consider portioning off the space, so that the front part of the garage functions as your carport, while the rear comprises your living space.
Some areas require special building permits before you begin garage conversion. For instance, if you convert your garage to a bedroom, you may need to install an emergency exit as per local Detroit, MI area building codes. If your garage conversion leads to defects in the drainage system of your property, you may need additional work done to handle this. Extra permits will also be needed. Some areas will need permits to replace the garage door with the window. Make sure that all permits are in place before you begin your garage conversion remodel.
I am looking to convert a one-car garage into a living space, a "den" like area. I'm looking for removal of the garage door in exchange for a wall with either a large window or french doors. The walls of the garage are currently composed of cinder block. Insulation, air ducts, and electrical work will be needed.

I am buying a new house 9/1/09 and want to convert the single car garage into a bedroom with a full bath. I wanted to get an estimate and find out how fast this could be done.
